My Direct Bus Ride to Fukuoka Airport

Hi! I’m a world-travel blogger,
Traveling Gomyaemmi.Welcome to my blog!
Planning a trip around Fukuoka, Japan,
with a stop in Yufuin? This Yufuin to Fukuoka transport guide is for you.

After taking a tour from Fukuoka to Yufuin and spending one or two nights there,
many travelers catch a bus back to Hakata Station or Fukuoka Airport.

Here’s how to use the official website
to reserve your bus one month in advance.
Fellow meticulous planners—the “J” types in MBTI—this one’s for you!

Which Yufuin Ryokan and Tour Did I Choose?

If you’re planning a Yufuin getaway,
you’re probably looking for a good ryokan—a traditional Japanese inn—or a Yufuin tourworth booking.
I certainly was!
I’ve included links to both of the options I paid for myself,
so take a look if you need some ideas.

First up is the place where I spent one night: my independently paid-for Yufuin ryokan stay.
It has both family baths and private baths, and it’s genuinely beautiful.

I liked both the guide and the itinerary.

For the journey from Fukuoka to Yufuin,
I personally recommend a tour that also visits
Beppu and Dazaifu.

The large coach is handy when you have lots of luggage, and you can get off in Yufuin.
Those were exactly the reasons I chose this tour.

A Handy Tip Before Booking Your Bus

If you’re checking out
and heading back in the morning from Yufuin toward Fukuoka,
the seats on the left get less sun.
If you prefer staying out of direct sunlight, book the left side.

After sightseeing in Yufuin,
plenty of travelers take the bus back to Fukuoka.
You can buy tickets at the station,

but on the website below, reservations open one month in advance.
That gives you a chance to secure your preferred seat early.

Yufuin can get busy in November, December, and January,
so I’d recommend booking ahead—seats can be competitive!

I’ll share the website address
and walk you through the process step by step.

Wait—Is There a Train Option?

To get back to Fukuoka from Yufuin,
you can take either the train or the bus. Both are options,
though the bus takes a little longer—
about 20 minutes more.

If you need a slightly quicker journey
or want to experience train travel in Japan,
the Yufuin no Mori is worth considering.

Some train options are also a little cheaper than the bus.

In my case, there wasn’t a train at the time I wanted,
and I needed to go straight to Fukuoka Airport, so I booked the bus.

Price: $17
Shortest journey time: about 1 hour 8–13 minutes
There are quite a few departures, too.
The last train
appears to leave Yufuin at around 7:27 p.m.

Book Your Yufuin to Fukuoka Bus

Here’s the reservation website.
It’s the official bus-booking site.

A one-way ticket costs ¥3,250 per person,
and the journey takes 1 hour 35 minutes,
depending on traffic.
I was a little worried because I traveled during Japan’s Golden Week holiday,
but we arrived without getting stuck in traffic.

Create an account,
then use your browser’s translation feature.
I translated the site into Korean, which made everything easy to follow.

The screens below are just an example.

Choose your travel date,

then select Oita Prefecture in Kyushu.
Choose the Beppu City/Yufuin area,
followed by Fukuoka City in Fukuoka Prefecture as your destination area.

Select Yufuin Ekimae Bus Center as your boarding stop.
For your arrival stop, choose Fukuoka Airport International
Terminal.

I was heading straight to the airport, so that was my choice.

You’ll then see how many seats are still available.
The one-way fare is ¥3,250 per person.

Again, this is just an example booking.
You can reserve your seats on this screen,
including choosing your specific seat.
One detail I found unusual: you have to select male or female for each passenger
and assign the seatsindividually.

A gender selection on a bus seat map was something I hadn’t expected!

Choose your seats, then hit “Reserve” to submit your booking.

That’s it—reservation complete!

Cancellation Fees

Keep in mind that cancellation fees apply.
I’ve included a screenshot of the detailed policy.

You can pay by credit card
and have a mobile boarding ticket issued,
which is handy to know.

Plan your Yufuin to Fukuoka journey ahead of time, whether you’re heading to Hakata
or going from Yufuin straight to the airport.
Keep these bus-booking steps handy
and give it a try!

Onboard Wi-Fi &

Charging: A Comfortable Bus Ride

My Actual Bus Experience

I was impressed with the bus.
There was plenty of legroom and Wi-Fi,
plus somewhere to charge my devices.
Just note that the outlets take Japanese-style plugs.
A plug adapter works, too.

Yufuin Bus Terminal

There are coin lockers at Yufuin Bus Terminal.
Check the hours shown below before using them.

Yufuin Bus Terminal
is right in front of Yufuin Station.
Check the timetable shown here.
Staff check passengers at the front of the bus before boarding.

Despite my Golden Week worries, the ride took just 1 hour 40 minutes.
I reached Fukuoka Airport and checked in without a problem.
The bus felt spacious and comfortable.

Wishing you a wonderful trip to Yufuin— enjoy every minute!
