How to Book and Find the Lowest Price
A Must-See on Your Amsterdam, Netherlands Itinerary
Everything from Booking to What to Know Before You Go
Hi! Looking for Van Gogh Museum tickets?
I’m a world-travel blogger, Traveling Gomyammi, and I’m glad you’re here.
When planning a trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands, there’s one place
that almost always makes the must-see list:

the Van Gogh Museum.
Even if you don’t know much about art, you know Van Gogh!
With so many familiar paintings, it’s easy to see why this museum earns a spot on so many Amsterdam itineraries.
One important thing to know: you can’t buy same-day tickets at the door,
so you need to book a ticket online for a specific date and timebefore you arrive.
That said, the ticket options below also offered same-day online booking when I checked.

At the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands,
some of the collection’s best-known works include
Sunflowers, Almond Blossom, and The Potato Eaters. These are the paintings
you’ll want to look out for.

Why People Cry at the Van Gogh Museum |
|||

I heard that Huh Yunjin had joked about “Van Gogh-huh-huh”—a little wordplay on his name and the sound of sobbing—
after crying her eyes out in front of his paintings.
My first thought was, “Really? Why?”
Then I read the comment below, and it made complete sense.

It described how Van Gogh longed for companionship but spent much of his life lonely, pouring himself into painting because he felt he had little else.
Even during the difficult period when he entered a psychiatric hospital, his younger brother Theo was the person he kept in touch with and leaned on.

As you make your way from the ground floor to the upper galleries, the sadness and loneliness running through his life
feel especially vivid. But then there’s that painting: Almond Blossom. The commenter described finding it at the top of the museum and feeling pure joy radiating from it.
The reason? Van Gogh painted it to celebrate the birth of Theo’s son.
It’s larger than you might expect, so standing in front of it can feel like stepping into that happiness.
The thought that it represented a rare moment of joy in Van Gogh’s otherwise troubled lifewas what made it so moving.
Right there in front of the painting, the commenter burst into tears.

And apparently, the thoughtful curation—and especially the surprisingly good audio guide— makes the experience even more emotional.
People even joke that an essential thing to bring is a face mask,so you can hide the tears.
That story sent me looking into this museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, dedicated to Vincent van Gogh. Here’s what I found.

Do You Need to Book the Van Gogh Museum in Advance? |
|||
General admission tickets are sold online, and you need a ticket with a designated entry time. There are no ticket sales at the entrance.
Visitors under 18 get in free, but they still need to reserve a free timed-entry ticket.
Once your Amsterdam itinerary is set, I recommend choosing your museum date early.
You can book through the museum’s own website. I also found that its list of official ticket sellers included Klook and MyRealTrip. Both were listed as authorized options.
Klook and MyRealTrip are useful if you prefer Korean-language product descriptions, booking information, and customer support.
They also support Naver Pay, Kakao Pay, and payment in Korean won. But the biggest draw?
When I checked, MyRealTrip was cheaper than the official website!
On the official website, the cancellation cutoff was 48 hours before your visit, while
Klook and MyRealTrip offered free cancellation up to 24 hours before entry.Check the terms attached to your particular ticket before paying.
MyRealTrip was also running a 6% discount on Europe bookings, which made it even cheaper. If you’re booking other Amsterdam tours too, I’d consider MyRealTrip for its bundle discounts.
Comparing Ticket Prices Across Booking Sites
|
Official Website Van Gogh Museum official admission price: €25 Korean-language audio guide for adults: an additional €3.75 Adult admission plus audio guide: €28.75 The original price note lists “₩42,000 / $0.60”; those figures do not match, so check the checkout total. |
Changes allowed up to 48 hours before entry If you’re booking directly, look for tickets released through cancellations for entry after 5 p.m.—it’s said to be a quieter time to visit. |

MyRealTrip One adult ticket, including the audio guide, starts at $32, with same-day purchase available—the lowest price I found! A mobile admission QR code can be used that same day. |

Van Gogh Museum Tips: What to Know Before You Go |
|||
Leave suitcases and other large bags at your hotel or another storage locationbefore heading to the museum.
Large luggage is not allowed inside, and items larger than 45 × 25 × 25 cm are prohibited.Pack light for your visit.
Public Transit Is Convenient—but Don’t Use the Rear Entrance
Take tram 2 or 5 to the Museumplein stop,
or take tram 12 to the stop by the rear of the museum and walk about five minutes to the main entrance. You cannot enter through the back.
Don’t Skip the Korean-Language Audio Guide
The Van Gogh Museum is known for its excellent audio guide. Give it a listen—it could be the most moving part of your visit.
Get Familiar with the Gallery Layout Before You Start
Set aside about two to three hoursfor your museum visit.
How long you need will depend on your pace and whether you use the audio guide.
The original hours are listed as 09:00–08:00, with special-exhibition days sometimes running until 20:00 (8 p.m.). Since that first range is unclear, check the official hours for your date.
The busiest period is generally 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., so consider visiting outside that window.
Booking a Canal Cruise Bundle? Allow Time to Get There
If you’re taking a canal cruise after the museum, allow enough time to get from the museum exit to the actual departure dock.
Check the meeting point in advance, too!
Photography: No Flash, Tripods, or Selfie Sticks
You can’t enter early, so arrive for the entry time printed on your ticket.
Van Gogh Museum Souvenirs I Recommend
The chocolates pictured below make lovely gifts—and they taste good, too! I’ve tried them myself: smooth milk chocolate, with packaging that makes me smile every time I see it.
