Theme Park Near Fukuoka, Japan: Huis Ten Bosch Tickets, Christmas, Fireworks & Hotel Guide

Huis Ten Bosch tickets and travel plans
Your complete planning guide
A year-end getaway from Fukuoka, Japan CHRISTMAS Just outside the cityAnd well worth the trip
Everything you need to know about Huis Ten Bosch tickets, hotels, fireworks, and getting there!

“Where should I go near Fukuoka?

Somewhere with fewer Korean tourists—
the kind of place Japanese locals visit!”

That’s what I asked a Japanese friend,

and their recommendation was Huis Ten Bosch.

This place blends Japanese charm with a distinctly European atmosphere.
If you love Christmas lights and sparkling nighttime scenery, you’ll be in heaven.

And if you love Miffy, you’re in for an extra treat!

Most people visiting Fukuoka
take a tour to Yufuin, Beppu, and Dazaifu.

(If you’re planning a ryokan stay—a night at a traditional Japanese inn—you could take a Yufuin tour,
then get off in Beppu or Yufuin and stay overnight.)

But if you’re thinking, “I want somewhere international visitors tend to overlook—
a getaway near Fukuoka that locals actually visit!”

Or, “I want a romantic year-end trip from Fukuoka
with beautiful Christmas scenery and a more relaxed atmosphere,” this is your place.
Summer gets a little too hot for my liking,
but spring, fall, and winter are wonderful times to visit.

European-style buildings line the canals,
and after dark, the lights come on, with some of Kyushu’s biggest fireworks displays on select dates.

You get two completely different experiences by day and by night.
It’s counted among Japan’s three major theme parks:

Disney, Universal, and Huis Ten Bosch.
Yes, really!

It’s a theme park, but you can explore at a leisurely pace without overwhelming crowds, taking your time
to soak up the pretty Dutch-inspired scenery.
Whether you’re coming with kids, your partner, or the whole family, it’s a lovely choice.

I especially recommend it for a Christmas or year-end trip to Japan.
It’s Japan’s largest theme park by area,so
it’s ideal if you love long walks and beautiful surroundings.

There are attractions, too—including an Evangelion attraction—
with more than 50 in total, plus gorgeous scenery throughout.
(But to me, this is more about enjoying the setting, taking photos,
and staying for the nighttime lights than racing between rides.)

It’s said to be especially beautiful from the week before Christmas through the end of the year.

There’s Teddy Bear Park and Miffy Wonder Square, too.
The nighttime scenery is gorgeous, and you can catch fireworks as well.

Here’s what it looks like in spring…
Are we sure this is Japan, not Europe?
I haven’t made it here in spring yet,
but apparently the tulips are wonderfully big and beautiful,
making it a popular trip for flower lovers.

The idea is to recreate a Dutch village, right down to the details.
Nagasaki Prefecture, where Huis Ten Bosch is located, has
a long history of exchange with the Netherlands, and that connection inspired the park.

Even the name Huis Ten Bosch
is Dutch for “house in the woods,” apparently.

How to Get to Huis Ten Bosch from Fukuoka

Location: Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan

From Fukuoka to Huis Ten Bosch,
you can use a JR Pass to travel by train. The journey takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes each way.
For a day trip, this is the package I recommend most:
round-trip JR train travel plus a one-day park pass.

If you’d rather head out a little later and enter after 3 p.m., then
the after-3-p.m. admission ticket is the one to book.
(It’s the cheapest option, and same-day booking is available.)
This is my personal pick for an adults-only trip.
You can take your time heading out and still stay for the evening lights.

Want a day trip with a round-trip bus from Hakata Station? In that case,
I recommend a bus tourinstead.

Departures are available from Tenjin, Hakata, and Fukuoka Airport,so you have a few options.
You’ll arrive at Huis Ten Bosch around 11 a.m.,
enjoy the park until about 8 p.m., and get back
to Fukuoka around 10 p.m.
Pretty convenient, right?

Huis Ten Bosch Hotels: Comparison & Recommendations

If you’re traveling with kids or want more time to explore,
a popular option is a hotel within the Huis Ten Bosch resortfor one night.
“Won’t that be expensive?” Fair question.

If you want to enjoy the park on both your arrival day and the following day,
booking one of the resort’s five hotels is worth considering.
Buy admission for your check-in day—even an after-3-p.m. ticket qualifies—
and you’ll receive admission for the second day.

Within the park, one of the most popular hotelsis
an antique-inspired, classic property: Hotel Europe. That’s its name.

It carries that “Have I somehow arrived in the Netherlands?”
atmosphere of the theme park right through your stay,
making everything feel wonderfully classic and romantic.

Guests can also take a complimentary, dedicated check-in cruise
from the Welcome Gate to the hotel.Such a lovely way to arrive!
(Only this hotel offers it.)

Within the resort, the most affordable hotelis
one that also includes free admission the following day: Hotel Rotterdam. That’s the budget-friendly option.
I recommend it if your plan is to spend all day exploring and only return to sleep.

(Rates including tickets start around $125, approximately ₩170,000.)

Another option in the resort, with a large communal bath
and a next-day one-day pass, is
Hotel Okura JR Huis Ten Bosch. It’s another one to consider.
This is a popular choice, and one big advantage is that
you can use the hot-spring baths multiple times—not just once.

It combines several of the other hotels’ best features.
You can also reenter the park.
There’s an airport shuttle, too,
so I highly recommend staying here if you’re considering a 1.5-day admission pass.

Hotel Nikko Huis Ten Boschoffers
a dedicated entrance for hotel guests, which means
you can enjoy the park, return to your room for a break,
and come and go almost as easily as you would at home. That flexibility
makes it a good choice for families with children.
However, it isn’t one of the hotels offering a complimentary next-day one-day passport.
(I recommend it if you want to arrive the day before, settle in,
then spend the following day going between the hotel and the park.) It’s right on the doorstep!

There’s a large communal bath, too.
Explore, take a break, then unwind with a long soak in the evening—perfect.
(Weekday and weekend prices can differ significantly,
so I recommend planning a weekday stay.
Weekday rates start at $91.)

Looking for November festivals near Fukuoka? Take note!

On November 14, an enormous
Huis Ten Bosch fireworks festival is scheduled.

For that fireworks display, special viewing-seat ticketsare available, too.
These give you access to a special panoramic viewing area, where
reserved seating means you can sit back and enjoy the show comfortably.
All that for $23? (This was a newly released ticket option.)

Things to Do at Huis Ten Bosch

Since the Netherlands is also Miffy’s home,
this is heaven for anyone who loves that adorable bunny. So much cuteness!

At the Miffy restaurant, I’d go for dessert rather than a full meal.
I’ve heard the desserts are pretty good.
The steak restaurant is good, too.

Take your time enjoying the scenery,
hop on canal cruises throughout the day,
and try a four- or five-person bicycle.
You get a little taste of both Japan and the Netherlands,
followed by beautiful nighttime lights and fireworks. It almost feels unfair how much this place offers.

You can actually ride this three-story carousel, too.
It’s beautiful during the day and just as lovely after dark.
