Balkans 4-country travel itinerary
Fairy-tale coastal towns in Eastern Europe
How to tour the Balkan Peninsula the smart way
A great Europe trip for Christmas

Eastern Europe Balkan tours are seriously underrated
Did you know that?

A lot of people book this as a Balkans 3-country or 4-country package trip!
It’s genuinely beautiful.

It still feels like a destination not many people know about yet,
but this is actually a surprisingly good place to visit
in November and December too.

Especially Dubrovnikstarts its winter festival
and Christmas season in late November,
and Kotor also rolls out winter festival programs around this time,
so the Old Town becomes unbelievably pretty.

Bled and Ljubljana feel especially magical in winter,
which makes Slovenia a great choice for a December trip too.
So if you’re thinking about traveling to the Balkans at this time?
It’s honestly much better than you’d expect.

The views feel unreal.

This is Dubrovnik in summer, by the way!

When I first started planning a Balkans trip,
even the city names felt unfamiliar, and with the country changing every few days,
the itinerary looked a little overwhelming at first.

But the real charm of a Balkans 3-country or 4-country trip
is how dramatically the vibe changes from one country to the next.
In a single trip,

you get everything from Alpine lakes to Adriatic coastal cities
and medieval Old Townsall in one route.
That kind of variety is what makes it so special.
It’s ridiculously pretty.

Especially when you look down from the Dubrovnik city walls
at the red rooftops and the Adriatic Sea—it’s stunning.
It honestly looks like a real-life fairy tale, straight out of a Disney movie.

If you’re already going all the way there and want to see all four Balkan countries,
I really recommend this tour.
It has tons of reviews, and honestly, the Balkan Peninsula isn’t the kind of place most people revisit easily,
so I liked that the route focuses on the most beautiful highlights.

You pass through Kranj, then explore Bled and Ljubljana,
and especially Bledhas that dreamy mix of Alpine scenery and lake views
that feels completely different from the Croatian
coastal cities that come later in the trip.

A morning in Croatia—

this mountain view was taken from my hotel.
Isn’t it gorgeous?

Goulash is a famous dish here,
and honestly, it kind of tastes like kimchi jjigae.

Zagreb · Otočac · Plitvice
Zadar · Split · Korčula · Dubrovnik

This route is easy to think of as

capital city → national park → Adriatic coastal cities → Dubrovnik.
That’s basically the flow of the trip.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik
is one of Croatia’s most iconic travel destinations,

and Dubrovnik Old Town in particular
feels like one giant historic monument.
It even kind of reminded me of the town from Attack on Titan…

The most famous thing to do in Dubrovnik
is the city walls tour, so if you have time, definitely do it.

See the city walls tour

The Adriatic view from the lookout point
makes the whole city feel seamlessly connected to nature.
It’s a completely different landscape from Neum or Montenegro.

If I had to recommend one more thing to do in Dubrovnik,
it would be the viewpoint and cable car.
I could never skip a view like this.

There’s also a Mount Srđ sunset tour, if that sounds like your kind of thing,
so that’s worth checking out too.

This one includes the cable car, an Old Town walking tour, and the city wallsall together
in one combo tour.
I’d recommend this one too.

Bosnia and Herzegovina — Neum was the surprise, even more than Mostar

The place I was most curious about in Bosnia and Herzegovina
was actually Mostar, but after the trip,
one of the places that stayed with me the most was unexpectedly
Neum of all places.

In photos, it looks just like Croatia,
but this is actually Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Along the waterfront in Neum, you’ll find hotels, pensions, apartment stays,
and restaurants lined up together,
which is why so many locals come here for vacation.

And the prices here are really affordable.

Coming from Croatia,
the border check into Bosnia was a little unusual—
we were checked again at the border crossing, bus by bus.

When you move through several countries on one tour package,
you don’t just see the big-name sights—
you also get the fun of discovering hidden small towns in Eastern Europe like this.
Neum, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s coastal town, is seriously beautiful.

Last up: Montenegro

Herceg Novi Kotor Sveti Stefan · Podgorica

The final country on the route is Montenegro.
The itinerary runs from Herceg Novi through Kotor and Sveti Stefan,
then continues down to the capital, Podgorica.

Kotor in particular is often paired with Dubrovnik
on Adriatic coast itineraries,
so they’re easy to visit together.

I went in with zero expectations, and ended up loving it.

It’s a jewel-like walled city on the Adriaticand absolutely worth seeing.
It’s affordable too.

Kotor is especially beautiful in winter.
It’s genuinely a great pick for winter travel.

If you were to plan this route as an independent trip,
it would be pretty complicated.

Crossing between four countries means
booking hotels,
arranging transportation between cities,
handling border crossings,
sorting out attraction tickets,
and moving your luggage around
all on your own.

That’s why for a route like this,
it’s actually worth comparing a Balkans 4-country package
with the cost of doing it independently.
