My honest, self-paid Tuscany tour review
while traveling from Florence to Rome including a winery and Civita too
a seriously well-planned day trip review

One of the best decisions I made on this Italy trip
was doing a Tuscany tour
on the way from Florenceto Rome!
The view looking down from Civita is absolutely stunning.
Most people take the high-speed train because it’s the easiest option,
but this was a family trip with my parents,
and it felt like a waste to spend an entire day just moving from one city to another.

We rode a large coach bus like this,
so I didn’t have to worry about lost luggage or suitcase size limits.
The air-conditioning was strong, and there were charging ports on the bus too.
A lot of Tuscany tours require a tram ride first
before you can even get to the departure point,
but this one lets you board the bus directly
with no tram transfer, which I really appreciated.
If I had just taken the train to Rome,
I would’ve spent the whole day in transit. Instead, I could store my suitcase, enjoy a Tuscany tour,
and still arrive in Rome by evening, surprisingly early, actually—around 6 p.m.
It made the whole day feel incredibly efficient and full.
They also gave us an audio receiver,
and I definitely recommend bringing your own wired earphones.

When people picture Tuscany,
they naturally think of cypress trees.
Seeing them in person really made it hit me: wow, I’m actually in Tuscany.
Honestly, it wasn’t just this road—
every single view outside the bus was beautiful.
For photos here, I recommend wearing
light-colored clothes.
I even saw people doing wedding shoots here.

Pienza: an even better Tuscany hill town than I expected |
a Renaissance planned town
We had free time in the village of Pienza.
I had breakfast there,
and tried the local specialty: sheep’s milk cheese gelato.
My dad quietly enjoying the slow pace of the morning
The guide also pointed us to good places to eat,
and recommended black truffle oil as a souvenir here.
I bought some, and it turned out to be such a great gift.
Everyone I gave it to loved it,
and I honestly wish I had bought a few more bottles.
I was also so happy to see the Val d’Orcia countryside spread out in one sweeping view.
You can even spot a building said to have been used as a filming location for Romeo and Juliet.
The town itself is charming and picture-perfect,
every alley is photogenic,
and it’s cool and pleasant for walking too.
Parent satisfaction level: extremely high.
You’ll also find little churches like this throughout the town.

Montepulciano winery: the highlight of the Tuscany tour |
Next, we visited
the oldest winery in Montepulciano for a tasting of four wines
plus a full meal.
The tour led by our guide felt especially efficient,
and we were the first group to arrive at every stop,
so we didn’t have to wait at allduring the entire day.
At the winery too, our group got the best window-side seats.
I totally understood why this Tuscany tour has so many reviews.
I think it had something like 1,400 reviews?
We listened to explanations in front of giant oak barrels,
took photos, and even as someone who doesn’t know much about wine,
I found the whole winery visit genuinely fun.

Tasting all four wines
right where they’re produced was on a completely different level from what I’ve had back in Korea.
They also served lasagna, and it was delicious!!!!
The staff were kind, the bathrooms were clean, and water was free.
We also had cookies, ham, and cheese with the wine, and the portions were generous.
Then we sat back and enjoyed the beautiful Val d’Orcia scenery.
(I was just a little tipsy.)
After wine and a quick nap on the road,
we arrived at the dying town
on the cliff—Civita!

I took this photo myself.
Civita, the place often compared to Castle in the Sky’s Laputa,
was honestly so beautiful.
(Personally, this was my favorite stop.)
It felt incredible to see a real village perched on top of a cliff,
and that first distant view of the town is seriously unforgettable.
To get to Civita,
it’s much easier if you can take a minibus,
and our guide worked hard to make sure we got one whenever possible—
truly a bus guardian angel.
On the way back, we were able to ride the minibus too.
Our guide was hilarious, and Civita itself felt so mysterious.
Since I was traveling with my parents,
I really appreciated how thoughtfully the guide checked on us throughout the day.
My dad, who hates anything too physically demanding,
thought it was absolutely beautiful.
I also loved that we could actually go inside Civita itself.
We had free time in the village,
and because it sits on a cliff, the views are pure art.
I would have seriously regretted skipping Civita on this Tuscany tour.
The guide’s explanations were clear, fun, and easy to follow too.
Honestly, getting to a place this dramatic
without a car and guide
would have been tough. Highly, highly recommend this tour.
And before you know it, you’re arriving at Rome Termini Station.
I really recommend this for travelers who
don’t have a rental car, or are traveling with parents or family.
